Why Edinburgh?

Why do we keep winning the most popular city to live in the UK (Guardian Travel Awards)? Edinburgh is full of jaw dropping architecture and has UNESCO World Heritage Status. Split into two- the Old Town and the New Town there is much to see. The Old Town is full of history and still gives you a flavour of how life may have been hundreds of years ago. Walking the cobbled streets and narrow alleyways of the Royal Mile will make you feel nostalgic and the sound of the bagpipes will give you a skip in your step as you walk to Edinburgh Castle, the most visited attraction in Scotland or Palace of Holyrood House (alternate sides of the Mile). The Old Town is a must see at any time of the year, however it gleans it’s best dress during August when the Fringe Festival takes over the capital celebrating the best of culture and art.

The New Town, still old in many ways gives you a feast of neoclassical and Georgian architecture all built between the 18th-19th centuries. Full of galleries including the Scottish National and Portrait Gallery it will give you an insight to some of Scotland’s most prolific figures. The New Town is filled with designer shops, boutique shops and many great eateries to sample an array of cuisine. The many food markets are a real hit with the local residents. You must take the chance to try some Haggis or even a Scotch Egg…

The people of Edinburgh are renowned for being welcoming and friendly and Edinburgh boasts an enormous range of nationalities but you will still be able to pick out many Scottish accents, which in some cases sound like a completely different language! Can you figure the following Old Scots phrase “lang may your lum reek”?

Edinburgh is vibrant, it’s full of hope and like all European cities has much to offer. You are spoiled for choice when selecting things to do but the good news is at Summer Camp 2018 you will be directed to all the best spots including the Castle and Royal Mile. On the final night you will be treated to a world spectacle that is The Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a show that you will never forget in your lifetime!

“This is a city of shifting light, of changing skies, of sudden vistas. A city so beautiful it breaks the heart again and again” (Alexander McCall Smith- British writer)
